Reading

1 min read

Understanding apical dominance, summer candle decandling, and obligatory chill-hour physiology in Pinus thunbergii bonsai.

Balancing Auxin Across the Canopy

Left unpruned, Pinus thunbergii channels growth hormone preferentially to its highest apical shoots, starving lower structural branches. By excising elongating spring candles in June (mekiri), the tree is induced to produce a secondary summer flush with shorter internodes and compact needle fascicles.
