Folio V — Garden Studies

Plan · Section · Elevation

Composed studies, not commissions

Rooms for plants, drawn upright from the plan.

Reading order

Each study starts as conditions on a plan — light, air, stone, water — and rises into a room you could stand in. Read the conditions before you borrow the planting.

How to read a study

A study sets one room’s light, humidity and materials beside the plants composed into it. The conditions are the brief; the planting is one considered answer to it.

What a study is not

These are composed scenarios written for Florivern — not documented commissions, client projects or built sites. A place name describes a climate and a material palette, not an address.

Where it leads

Every plant named opens its Atlas profile, where suitability is set out properly. Store pieces appear only when a study names them; nothing here is sold as a finished garden.

Light & air

North-East Zenithal Sawtooth Glazing · 150–300 µmol/m²/s · 60% RH

± 0.00

A quiet Copenhagen sculptor's studio pairing diffused zenithal skylight with large-scale fenestrated aroids and moisture-loving understory ferns.

Designed around soft, shadowless northern sky luminance, this double-height studio anchors its acoustic corners with a mature cedar-totem Monstera deliciosa while grouping Goeppertia orbifolia and Adiantum raddianum beside a travertine water basin.

Kyoto Moss & Tokoname Walled Courtyard

Sakyo Ward, Kyoto · Charred Sugi Cedar & Shirakawa Gravel

Light & air

Open Sky Zenith with Western Eave Shade · Full Morning Sun · 65% RH

± 0.00

An open-air tsubo-niwa pocket courtyard staging aged Pinus thunbergii bonsai on charred cedar benches above raked Shirakawa granite gravel.

Framed by timber shoji thresholds, the courtyard elevates a 12-year Pinus thunbergii to eye level for seated viewing while maidenhair ferns colonize the damp shaded stone footing below.

The Arid Travertine Solarium

Lisbon, Portugal · Unfilled Roman Travertine & Brushed Steel

Light & air

Unobstructed Southern Exposure · 8 Hours Direct Sun · 35% RH

± 0.00

High-insolation south-facing loggia composed around sculptural Euphorbia trigona columns and silver-canopied Mediterranean olive standards.

Celebrating intense afternoon solar geometry, this thermal-mass travertine gallery pairs drought-adapted CAM succulents with container-grown Olea europaea trees in breathable stoneware.

Conservatory & Atrium

Epiphytic Glasshouse Bathing Pavilion

Zurich, Switzerland · Tadelakt Lime Plaster & Vals Quartzite

Light & air

Frosted East Clerestory Light · 70–80% Ambient RH · 22°C

± 0.00

Warm vapor-rich architectural bath sanctuary utilizing ambient steam to nurture lithophytic Anthurium clarinervium and canopy Phalaenopsis orchids.

By harnessing natural hydro-thermal humidity and diffused frosted glazing, the bathing pavilion replicates cloud-forest vapor pressure for epiphytic roots without mechanical misting.

THE HERBARIUM LETTER — FOUR A YEAR

What to repot, what to read, and what has just been accessioned.

Seasonal, unhurried, and easy to leave.

ON THE RECORD

Pet-safety notes in the Atlas cite the ASPCA classification recorded for each species. Where no classification has been verified, the record says so.
