Reading

1 min read

Evaluating wall microporosity, evaporative root cooling, and salt efflorescence in Japanese Shigaraki and Tokoname vessels.

Why Vessel Wall Breathability Matters

Vitreous glazes seal a planter wall into an impermeable barrier, forcing all gas exchange through the top surface alone. Unglazed high-fired Shigaraki and Tokoname clays retain vitrified structural strength for frost resistance while preserving microscopic interstitial pores created by burned-out organic inclusions.
